BUY THIS BOOK...PLEEEAAAASSSSEE!!!!
It's very exciting to see this new humanoids/devil's due deal going through, so we get more gorgeous European comics translated into English. All that remains is for people to buy them and maybe we can have a load more in the future. I know there is a lot of debate over the format, and I do love the traditional album size. I think Cassaday's art suffers a little here as it was meant for that Franco Belgian format, however the most important thing is that the stuff is being printed somehow.
About that art, it truly is phenomenal. It's detailed and kinetic, it looks like a movie on the page. The story calls for Cassaday to draw a lot of very different things. There are foot chases, one on one conversations, executions, strategic conferences, resurrected prisoners attacking German gun emplacements during a test of a Nazi supernatural weapon(you know, the things you find in every comic). He, as always, gets it all magnificently right.
The story itself is, I suppose, a kind of Indiana Jones crossed with The Devil Rides Out. The heroes here seem resolutely intellectual, although they leap into action when it looks like their suspect is going to escape. It is dense, with a lot of information in places, but I found that satisfying. There is a lot going on, with various plot strands, but at the same time it's easy to see how they all contribute to the single story of Legion.
This is a beautiful, satisfying comic book. In many ways it has a classical feel, from it's World War 2 setting and it's kind of adventure serial tone. At the same time, it's knowing and modern, especially with pencil work like this. Please people, buy it now (or in trade of course).
Art: 5 - Excellent
