I’ve been in love with Parker and Hardman’s take on the Red Hulk the last five issues.  While this issue takes a brief break from that creative team, it still is a fun, if not lighthearted romp with the Hulk.  Parker’s previous efforts had a mixture of serious character work with the whimsy and insanity of Marvel’s Silver Age.  It was a perfect marriage of silver age storytelling with modern tones.  This issue tips a little bit more into zany territory with Hulk and Red Hulk fighting a squadron of mind controlled alien heavyweights all because some alien is mad at Hulk.  As the story progresses, the dialogue and fighting become more silly, but in a way, it’s the whole point of the issue.  With Ed McGuiness on pencils, I think Parker looked to capture some of the insanity from his run with Loeb and mix it with Silver Age wackiness.  For the most part it works well, and I found myself smiling at some of the goofiness on the page.  This is certainly an issue that you have to approach with a certain mindset because it could certainly turn off the type of reader that doesn’t appreciate these diversions.  McGuiness’ art is just fine in this book although it seems Parker’s scripts toned down his ability for his more bombastic style that he used with Loeb.  Personally, I’m ok with that because I feel his art is stronger when its more grounded and contained than when he’s allowed to just draw ginormous figures.  Overall, this is a fun issue, and I highly recommend it for folks who left the book after McGuiness and Loeb finished.
