I just read the third issue to John Byrne’s The High Ways. I was not a great fan of Byrne’s Next Men as it reminded me too much of the X-Men. I’m not a big X-Men fan and they both had rhyming titles plus the super hero characters reminded me of those Marvel heroes too. I could be wrong in those impressions as I only read a few issues of Next Men before I bailed. I mention the Next Men though as supposedly The High Ways is set somehow in or around that universe, though I doubt the Next Men will make a crossover appearance in this series.

At any rate, I’ve never cared that much for Byrne’s art either, as it has gotten to same-y for me over the years, although I think he’s more than a competent artist. I’m writing this sounding pretty darn negative and critical, however, I guess you could say, I went into The High Ways, with not too high expectations, but it’s turning into one of the better series Byrne has worked on in a while. It’s a hard SF tale (but don’t let that scare you off). It starts out with a young recruit and quickly turns into a mystery in space, and by issue three, some of the mystery is revealed, and it gets even more intriguing from there. All in all this has been one of the better SF comics I’ve read in a while, and I hope Byrne will continue do more with this series as I think it is well written with good characters, and I’d be curious to read more about them.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
