Some serious shit is about to go down. It's always a bad sign when a naked woman covered in blood comes out of a coffin.
Mignola is great with action scenes and normal, diaologue scenes in his Hellboy comics. We get a great fight with giants for Hellboy, and essentially an origin story for Gruagach the shapeshifting elf. Again it really helps that you read some other trades of Hellboy in order to get the full gist of the Hellboy Universe right now. 'Chained Coffin and Other Tales', 'Strange Places', and 'Darkness Calls' are essential for this arc. Anyways, I love it that Mignola gives us what was just a minor character in 'The Corpse' a full blown origin. You actually start to feel sorry for the guy and you can kinda see why Gruagach wants to get his people back as kings of Earth. It's a shame we have to wait for next issue to get the full blown beginnings of this 'Blood Queen' but Mignola provides us a part one story for Koshchei the Deathless. It would've been better if he did this for 'Darkness Calls' but I love it he is taking the time to tell the 'origin' for a mythological character. He should do that more for other myths and monthers....hell make a series out of that and I would read it.
Duncan Fegredo can draw so close in the style of Mignola it's creepy sometimes. He gets somewhat of a break here since there is more talking then fighting but man, his panels are gorgeous. So much detail into the enviroments and characters, it's insane it's all being done by one man. I noticed this a lot in 'Darkness Calls' but Fegredo likes to change the color when Hellboy is in the fight. It's only a tad of orange for the panels but it just sets the mood quite nicely for each fight. We also get Guy Davis for the Koshchei story and it's just as good as any artist who has done a Hellboy book. Again it's eerie to see so many artists keep the same Mignola style in every book.
We still got a long ways to go for this story arc but it's coming along nicely. The tension is setting up and I'm sure this new beast for Hellboy will put up one hell of a fight. As long as Mignola stays on as writer and Fegredo stays on as artist; this will be a great Hellboy arc for years to come.
