Hellboy reads great no matter what story you start out with. You could read the sixth trade then go right to the first and not get confused. But now Mignola is doing something he really hasnt done fully: have the majority of his Hellboy titles take place after the next. This ‘Wild Hunt’ isnt years before the last major story ‘Darkness Calls’, this is basically a couple of days afterwords. But Mignola has done this earlier before that, with the 7th trade you get all of the story points referenced here.

Mignola is basically bringing a ton of story elements from past Hellboy titles into this. ‘The Corpse’, ‘Strange Places’, ‘Darkness Calls’, ‘Nature of the Beast’, and much much more into this. There’s a lot of exposition in this issue, pretty much explaining what the Wild Hunt is and setting up the predictiment for Hellboy. But it was still entertaining to read, Hellboy is obviously losing some of his marbles here…I mean this is the second straight time he’s staying over dead people’s houses. Plus stuff from the previous stories are catching up with him and it doesnt end up well for the final page of this issue.

The art in this is done by the man who did ‘Darkness Calls’. Maybe it’s a slight disappointment that the ‘Chapel of Moloch’ had Mignola as artist…I was hoping he could do this somehow as well. But Fegredo is pretty much as qualified for a Hellboy artist cause he brings much dark and gothic elements to the tale. The detail in the people are great and the enviroments are beautiful to look at. Overall if Mignola never does art again, Fegredo as a regular artist would be fine with me.

This was pick of the week for me just because I am loving what Mignola is doing. All of the previous stories are going to end up in one place and the Hellboy Universe might not be the same again. The art is fantastic as well, but that’s pretty much a given for any Hellboy title. Pick this up in the future guys, it’s definitely worth your time if you’ve been following Hellboy for almost his entire run.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
