It’s tough to review any Hellboy stories, whether in issue or in trade format. Every single story Mignola has given us from the start as been teriffic no matter what the story is. This 3 issue arc of The Crooked Man, is no different; with a soild story and myth to go along with it, this could be one of the scariest Hellboy stories to date. All thanks to Corben and his teriffic pencils, and also Dave Stewart for the dark tone he gives with the colors in the book.

The Crooked Man might win my own personal award for ‘Creature that will wet your pants the most’. Just look at the cover and dont tell me if you were little you wouldnt get nightmares from that thing. Overall the story was well done, in fact Hellboy had little to do with this final issue. Sure he hit a lot of people or Skeletons and had some one-liners. But this was more focused on the preist and Tom, and it’s that I love about Mignola. Every story Mignola does tries to bring life to the minor character and these guys are just as represented respecifully as Hellboy himself.

It also doesnt hurt that the art, as usual, is top-notch with some of the best talent around. Corben is the master at horror comics and the details he gives to each panel is amazing. It might sound funny to you but look at the beards or hair in this series, some of the best detail just come from the hairs alone. But the backgrounds are amazing as well, whether it’s a church collapsing or a empty forest, Corben is able to provide a creep factor to any of the enviroments.

It’s not the most important story to the Hellboy Universe, but it’s entertaining in it’s own right. We’ll have to wait and see how this will be collected for the next volume of trades, but getting the back issues isnt a bad idea either. With virtually no ads, this is something for anyone to pick up if you love Hellboy, or comics in general.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I don’t understand the love for Corben.

  2. He does a great job putting in detail in anything he draws. The people, although they have big chins, look realistic and he just adds a big creep factor to his art. With ‘Makoma’ he made a barrian African land scary, with this he makes a calm and seemingly empty woods terrifying. Also, he makes corpses the scariest thing on the planet.

  3. I felt pretty meh about this issue.  The action in this story was very lacking, and while the first issue was creepy, the rest of the series just didn’t really live up to that.  I like Corben’s art, but the coloring and inking was all sorts of weird for me in this issue.

  4. Corbin is an old pro from way back.  Good to see him get some recognition.  I wish there was a title called "Redneck Hellblazer" that had these characters in it.  I’d buy it.

    Great review!
