Why can’t Richard Corben do a monthly Hellboy comic? I’ve been enjoying all of these one-shots by him for a good year now and I’m surprised we haven’t seen anything more then a mini-series. Maybe Corben can’t do a monthly schedule and maybe it’s for the better he can’t do a monthly series. Because these one-shots are more then enough for me to really love Hellboy.

This was an interesting one-shot because at first I thought it would be ‘by the numbers’. I love Roger the Homunculus  and it’s great to see him again. But for awhile I thought this was just going to be a retelling of his origin and a small fight with some zombies. But no, Mignola pulls a twist towards the end that was really powerful. Usually these one-shots have some sort of twist but not as heartbreaking as this one was. It’s nice to see that Mignola is still able to come up with some fun, but dramatic stories when he needs too. With Corben he adds in the visual treats. Why a man is so good at drawing detailed corpses, cemetaries, and monsters is something I don’t want to question. But it’s what he’s great at and this book is peppered with that. Also, Corben is good at setting the tone and it’s pretty much creepy from page one. (Never read Of Mice and Men again)

Next month we’re going to get the continuous adventures of Hellboy that I haven’t been a fan of. I still think at this stage of his career, Mignola should just stick to one-shots and mini’s instead of telling a continuous stories. To me, those have been the best Hellboy stories and it really brings in the creative juices for both Mignola and whoever is the special artist. Hopefully we get to see more Richard Corben later in the fall, but as for now: Bring on The Fury!
