Hellblazer was one of those comics that I was drawn to, and I don’t really know why. For the most part, I think magic is fairly lame, but somehow this book that’s all about magic has sucked me in for the greater part of my comic reading existence. So why do I love this book? John Constantine is a cheeky fucking bastard, and it makes me love him all the more. He is the anti-hero on steroids, yet he sense of morality paired with his will to give a right kicking to anyone’s ass make him so damn lovable.
After being Pick of the Week last month, we find the story of Constantine’s battle with a mysterious merely picking up for the grand finale. This story throws some twists and turns in it, but the pace is blistering and I found myself tearing through the pages to find out what’s been happening. It’s no surprise that the book’s such a page turner: Andy Diggle has been rocking this book ever since he jumped on. And it writes it so well, I hope he never leaves.
Not enough can be said about the art. It simply fits. And it fits perfectly. It’s dark and evil when it needs to be; it’s clear and simple at other times; it becomes insane as the sanity of the story spins to the dark side. It’s just perfect.
If you’re not reading this current storyline, do yourself a favor and track down #240 and pick up this issue. You’re in for a real treat with this series. If you’re still skeptical, pick up the new trade that’s out and give Diggle’s Constantine a whirl. You may just love the bastard.
