I’m not sure why i initially picked up this series. Even though I’m a rabid sports fan, i just don’t like anything about MMA. Maybe it was the previews or the interviews that i read, but this issue confirmed what drew me to it.

Its not really a story about a semi-pro MMA fighter. Its about a guy lost in his 20s trying to figure out who he is and what his passion in life is. Working as a corporate wage slave, he quits on a whim to pursue his dream…and that just happens to involve brutal MMA fighting inside of a ring. As someone who was lost through most of his 20’s, i found this character very relatable and i’m sure others will too. Sure its parts Rocky and Fight Club, but it still manages to feel fresh, and i’m really looking forward to the final 2 issues.

The black and white art by Kevin Mellon is killer. As if someone stole his personal sketchbook and published it, i’m seeing an expressive combination of sophisticated line work, gestural charcoal like tones, laid on top of carefully considered anatomy. The lettering by Crank! is also really nice. There is some interesting type and design work happening that we don’t see enough of in comics. Overall this is a refreshing book that takes some creative risks and worth checking out.

Story: 4 - Very Good
