Despite the promotional campaign used to launch the title, I was really excited for this book to come out.  It’s a new creator owned book featuring characters from the Invincible universe.  I found this to be a very enjoyable issue, although I feel there is a caveat to place with one’s enjoyment: you need to be familiar with these characters.  One of the real drawbacks is that I didn’t feel it was very accessible to people who haven’t read Invincible or who have no idea what Guardians of the Globe are all about.  It’s very self referential.  I could understand someone who is outside of the loop not really enjoying the issue as Kirkman and co. don’t take much time to introduce the characters or really explain what’s going on.  I was able to follow it because I just recently plowed through a bunch of Invincible comics, but I can sympathize with someone not in tune with that.  The story was really interesting, and it’s great to see these characters that have been more in the background take a more prominent place in their own title.  I felt there were some great character moments with the Shapesmith and the new Yeti character.  And Brit is a great addition to the team.  The art is exciting and fun.  There’s nothing overly amazing about the first issue, but the action is incredible.  Getty also did an excellent job of making the scenes with talking characters much more dynamic.  This is just a fun romp of a comic.
