This issue was headache-inducing, and not in a good way.  Usually, I don’t mind high-concept stories with a lot going on; Morrison’s Batman RIP story is a good example of what I’m referring to.  But in this issue, there’s a lot going on and its hard to process all of it.  One, we’re introduced to yet another group calling themselves the Guardians (and I liked Quill’s response when asked what his own team’s name is).  Then Peter’s team shows up, but time has done a number on them (I won’t spoil what, but it’s classic Guardians funny).  Then I was fine through the majority of the story, and Jack Flag’s situation really intrigued me.  And then, all of a sudden, everything went upside-down.  There’s a panel near the end that’s split jaggedly into three, and what we see is interesting, but then nothing is done with it and we never find out what it means.  And then we’re dumped into a brand new situation extending from the last issue, but we still aren’t sure what’s going on.  In short, by the end I was extremely confused and disoriented and without any sense that all would be explained.

My other issue is the art.  Wes Craig’s style is vastly different from either Brad Walker or Paul Pelletier, two artists whose work has practically defined the tone of this book.  Craig’s figures are very cramped and small, losing all sense of stature or power.  I’m sure he has fans, but at least for this book I’m not one of them.

I hope the situation stabilizes next issue and we can start to comprehend what’s happening.  I think this is going to be a fun story, but the zigging and zagging needs to stop first.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 2 - Average
