Lo and behold dear children! The mystical Geoff Johns has wrote to us the origin of the greatest Green Lantern: Hal Jordan….For the second time. Yes if anyone wants to go back and re-read all of Johns run on GL, you’ll notice he already has done an origin story. In 2005 he did the ‘Secret Files and Origin’ that lead into ‘Rebirth’. So why should we focus on yet another, and possibly pointless origin story?

Why? Well because for all intent and purposes, this is the best origin story for any character. This rivals that of ‘Batman: Year One’ as one of my favorite origin stories. What Johns does here is nothing but remarkable. He is able to weave in a ton of Jordan’s backstore into this simple story arc, AND weave in ‘Blackest Night’ no less. There are too many great moments here but one I want to focus on is: Sinestro. Johns’s take on the hero (now villain) is really great, I mean it is one of the best written characters in a long time. He writes Sinestro in that every single word Sinestro says, he believes 100%. Sinestro is one of the most arrogant men in the universe, but still has his duties and that’s what makes him a great villain.

Ivan Reis should be up for ‘Best Artist’ for this arc. Some of the best pencils in the business in this book. Everything is detailed from the characters to the backgrounds. Panels like Jordan’s plane exploding, to panels in the rain, to the great shot of Jordan projecting his father on his ring….Brilliant. I would recommend this book for the art alone.

It’s though to review something when so many people have already read this on the site. But for all of you newbies who come on here every day, who want to find something to get into. This trade will give you the full reason on why we love comic books. If it wasnt for the Sinestro Corps War, this would be the best GL story, period.
