Remember Blackest
Night
?  How could you not.  It was only one of the most impressive event
series from either of the ‘Big Two’ in years and changed the course of the DCU
for years to come, or so they keep telling us.

Blackest Night was
a massive banquet of superhero goodness.
It was a buffet of comic event wonderful-ness.  It was a veritable Thanksgiving Dinner done
comic book style and it was delicious.

Unfortunately this has led to the War of the Green Lanterns fulfilling the role of the infamous leftovers.  The days and weeks after Thanksgiving where
you force yourself, or more likely someone forces you, to not let anything go
to waste.  Some people like leftovers and
so for them the turkey sandwiches and re-heated stuffing are just as enjoyable
for the rest of the weekend as they were on Thursday.

But I don’t like leftovers.

I don’t care how you try to re-dress it or spice it up, I
know they’re leftovers.  It’s not a casserole;
it’s a mix of all the crap no one ate the first time.  Just like the fact that Hal and company are
now all members of different Corps.
Nothing about this feels new or exciting.  This concept was fun the first time, with the
non-Lantern heroes and villains of the DCU becoming deputized into the various
Corps.  That was a meal that was cooked
properly and served in a timely manner.
Now we’re being forced to shovel down casserole and turkey sandwiches.  Of course by forced I mean not forced at all –
no one is making me buy this.  Perhaps I
just have a morbid curiosity as to whether or not all the leftovers can
actually be consumed.

The one bright spot in this story is Krona.  Krona is the dish that you really like but that
your Aunt forgot to put out on Thanksgiving only to then stop by with it later.  Where the hell was that when I really wanted
it?  I should’ve been able to eat that the
first time around – when it mattered.
Now all it’s reduced to is a futile effort to polish up all these sad,
depressing leftovers.

Leftovers, leftovers, leftovers.

I know I can’t be the only one that’s sick of all these
re-treaded, re-heated dishes.  I’m sick
of turkey – be it green, yellow or any other color.  It’s time to move on.

  1. I really hope that this review makes it into the podcast, because you clearly put a lot of work into sustaining that Thanksgiving metaphor. I know that sounds kind of sarcastic, but it’s not. Your review made my night.

  2. Totally summed up how I feel about this book and particular storyline. However, I would give the artwork in this book and the series a 2 as well. Why not do some smaller scale stories concerning John and Kyle before leaping into another event? I would like to see this storyline end not with the death of John or Kyle but maybe Kyle moving onto the Blue Corps.

  3. @sakuuya  – thanks man, glad to hear it

@neptunes55  – I was, and still am, a big Tomasi fan and feel like Kirkham has continued to bring the awesome art-wise to this series.

I think I’m done with the Lanterns until after this event.
