Argh! I’m tired of misleading covers! When I see Ganthet about to go all Ryu on Cyborg-Superman on the cover, I want to see something like that inside! We get nothing on that and in the end; it hurts the character more then anything else.

Bedard does have a knack of wrapping things up quite a bit too easily. The situation in this arc went from hell to completely gone like it was never a problem. At first Bedard did a good job writing for Cyborg-Superman; giving him a completely different voice then other villains. In this issue, Cyborg-Superman is so generic and has no uniqueness about him/it. Then you have the stuff with Boddika; and while it’s nice to see the Alpha lanterns evolve as a whole; I don’t really care about her plight. I was focused on Rayner, Stewart, and the others fighting back; Stel getting saved; and Ganthet trying to better then his Guardian counterparts. All I got though was Boddika pretty much saving the day and everything else is just solved in the background.

I wanted to like this issue but it just didn’t feel true to me. The incidents were wrapped up way too nicely; some aspects of the plot were completely dropped; and we didn’t get anything promised on the cover. Yes covers lie to us a lot and it happens all the time. But when you promise ‘Ganthet vs Cyborg-Superman’ in bold letters for everyone to see…..You need to deliver.

Story: 2 - Average

  1. I never would have thought it but this is my last issue of GLC. IMO there is a lot going on but it doesn’t mean there is a story. Johns has stretched this stuff too thin. We don’t need continual building to something else and teases that don’t deliver.

Brightest Day and all it implies has driven me fron DC.

  2. I hate the Brightest Day series itself, but as a banner as a whole, it doesn’t bother me so much.
