Here I thought that my experience with Green Lantern would come to an end with Blackest Night. Boy how wrong was I? Sure, Brightest Day hasn’t thrilled me, but the continuing adventures with Hal Jordan sure has. With a mysterious new villain emerging and an uneasy alliance continuing with the New Guardians; the storytelling is possibly endless. With a creepy ass cover of the creepiest villain in DC, I’m expecting to wince a few times. The last page certain was able to do that.

Everytime I think I’m going to get tired of Larfleeze I get delighted by Johns continually making him funny. That’s what really makes the character work, more of a comedic role then anything else. Here we get more funny lines by the orange ‘muppet’ and also the set up of the epic X-mas one shot Johns has been hinting at. When you throw in Hector Hammond though, you’re going to get more nightmares then laughs. I didn’t think him being the ‘villain’ of sorts to Larfleeze would be good. But so far Johns has proven these two have more in common then originally thought. I like how Johns is able to weave in humor and terror at any moment. When the two come together, you are just witnessing a nightmare only Salvador Dali can dream of.

To help with that dream comes with more fantastic artwork by Mahnke. I knew that his take on Hammond would be creepy as hell. Just seeing that huge head on that tiny body (flip flopping Josh Brolin’s plight) just creeps me out. Everything else about the issue is gravy, although his take on Larfleeze is still a bit off. When we get a straight on shot of the guy it really is off putting. Although seeing him write a letter to Santa is still funny.

That last page really did make me think: “Holy fuck!!” I’m not sure if I’m prepaired to see that monstrosity for a full issue next month. As long as Johns and Mahnke deliver the goods though….I guess I have no choice.
