I've been wanting this story arc to end for a little while now. I thought for Johns it was lagging a little bit, which means sadly it was still one of the best books I was reading. I was thinking that the Alpha Lanterns story went on a little long and this issue shit happens.
In this issue we see four things happen. All of which to me were very substantial to the Green Lantern Corp. and the over all story that is leading to Blackest Night.
First thing that happens in this story is the introduction of the Red Lantern that is fueled by rage. Now mind you we only see it in the beginning of the story, but it plays a roll later and I will get back to it.
The next thing was what we saw coming last issue and that was Laira, one of the lost lanterns, getting her ring taken away from her. She believes that what she did was right, we have a new law and that means we can kill anyone in the Sinestro Corp. Doesn't this make her justified? Thankfully the answer is no. I'm glad that even though everything seems to be going crazy with the guardians that they still have some sense in them at least until they introduce the second law.
The new law is that the Corps can use lethal force against all enemies of the Green Lantern Corps. I know this may sound cheesy but before they introduce the second law there was a full two pages of advertisements. I was glad that they were there, it helped build the suspense for an extra second as I flipped the page. Now I don't know why I was shocked by this new law since it seems like the next logical step from the first law, along with all of the new Corps that will be popping up in the next year.
Also we quickly saw the formations of the Orange Lanterns. Not much was there only a few panels, but I'm interested to see where it goes. I know they are based off of Greed, but that is about it. Lastly was something I saw coming as soon as they introduced the Red Lantern is that Liara becomes the a Red Lantern because she has much rage. I thought this was pretty cool in my book. This along with Ganthet and Sayd starting their new corps, shows that we are definitely in for a shake up. If one of the lost lanterns becomes a Red Lantern and another becomes an Alpha Lantern, no one seems safe.
Quickly I find the new Alpha Lanterns to be creepy. Well played Geoff Johns.
Last thing I wanted to mention before I talked about art was how much I have loved the chats between Sinestro and Hal during this arc. It really shows how much respect the two have for each other and how in some weird way they are still friends. I also love the fact that the biggest reason that Sinestro did what he did was to push the Corps in the right direction, because he still believes in them. Now that is a villain.
Lastly the art on this book was done by McKone. I haven't enjoyed his art that much on the last couple issues, but this one worked for me. I thought he managed to really hit Sinestro and Liara just right. Hal looked a little odd to me in some panels, but it was good overall. I am looking forward to Reis's return to this book as I enjoy his art very much. I really enjoy his take on Hal.
Art: 4 - Very Good
I loved when Sinestro said
"Ganthet shared it with you prior to you ‘Dropkicking me through Coast City’".
Thats hilarious! Sinestro flat out says that Hal Jordan totally kicked his ass.
Another reason as to why I like the pink version of Hitler
