Hard to believe there was a time when Green Lantern sucked so bad that DC decided the best thing to do was kill him.

Yep, back in the days of varient covers and speculative hysteria, ol’ Hal Jordan just couldn’t cut it and after he killed like a million people he got kilt himself and the DC Universe went on without him.

Taking up the mantel was Kyle Rayner and John Stewart and Co. but Hal? Nope, that dude was over and done. Buried. Forgotten.

Enter Geoff Johns – Fanboy done good. I liken Johns to Willy Wonka – dude was a just fan that won the golden ticket. Lucky for us Johns didn’t squander the lucky break he got and right out the gate he started working his charm on the DC Heroes he grew up with and loved. But it was with Green Lantern that he truly hit his stride.

Green Lantern: Rebirth is a fucking incredible comic arc by Johns and one that got me back into comics (and sure a lot of other people as well). Bringing Hal Jordan back was not an easy task – at least in the DCU were he was looked upon as a pariah and a murderer – but little by little Hal Jordan was able to regain his stature and former glory, all thanks to ONE man. Geoff Johns.

Almost a decade later Johns has closed the book on his epic tale, one that will surely go down has the greatest Green Lantern run of all time. Something to proud of and I feel extremely lucky that I was able to enjoy.

Thanks Geoff for many years of great Green Lantern comic book reading.

(oh and the art in this issue? Holy fuck. Worth the $7.99. Mahnke and Co. deliver page after page of remarkable work. Outstanding stuff.)

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Great review ghostmann! I totally agree with you about the art….fuckin’ amazing. Definitely worth the $7.99.

    • Thanks dude. How great is Mahnke? I’m stoked that he and Johns will be moving over to Justice League of America after this. Count me in!

    • I’ve loved Mahnke since the Justice League Elite series, but he really seems to be getting better and better all the time! He’s like the Anti-Liefeld! (who’s work I enjoyed a lot at first)

    • Mahnke’s art has consistently gotten better and better over the years. His early stuff was hindered by over use of the ink bottle, but as the years went by his lines got cleaner and detail got richer. I think his best is yet to come.

He is currently in my top 10 artists list – a list of people that if their name is on the cover I’m buying it regardless. 🙂
