I was more than a little disappointed in this issue. While it was better than issue #6, which felt like a huge mistep from the punch in the gut emotionally driven issues #4 and 5. The reveal at the end of the last issue, while shocking, didn't fit with a street level hero like Green Arrow and I was happy to see the reveal early on in the issue.
I also enjoyed the interaction between Hal and Ollie but it felt out of place considering what Green Arrow has been through. Their "interrogation" techniques felt out of place and ridiculous. It would fit more in the last Green Arrow series but when it comes to those responsible for the incapacitation of Ollie's son, I doubt he would be so lenient on them.
While I can appreciate the lighthearted nature that this book seems to have adopted, it should have been more of a slow burn rather than the complete 180 that came with the past two issues. All these elements Winnick introduced are great but he should have saved them for one or two arcs down the road, not during an story where Ollie is searching for his recently paralyzed son.
Art: 3 - Good
While the interrogation may have seemed out of place, it seems as though he’s snapped a little since Connor was kidnapped, as evidenced by his dark, foreboding "Get me my damn bow" in #5. He’s now got to man up and just do whatever it takes to get him back, so I think once they get him back, we can return to the emotional aspect of the book we’ve gotten used to in past issues.
I was going to write a review about the disconnect between the humor in this issue and the situation and anger about Ollie’s son. But your review saved me from having to do so.
While I enjoyed the banter between Hal and Ollie, I couldn’t help but think about the fact that Ollie should be focused and obsessed with finding Connor, not joking around.
@TheSeanFromLaramie – Your exactly right about Ollie having snapped, but those events all happened in issue 4 and 5. It’s 6 and 7 that have felt mostly out of place.
@grigs – I’m still loving this book and i would enjoy some lightheartedness, just not so soon. But you’re right, the Ollie/Hal stuff was golden! Maybe it would have been better to include an interatction like that in the Green Lantern book maybe? at least then it doesn’t interupt this emotional story
