Over the last few months, I’ve come to think of iFanboy as the home of Green Arrow/Black Canary, only because this seems to be the only community that actually likes this book.  I’ve been on board with this series from the get go, although I couldn’t really tell you why.  I think it has something to do with my secret man crush on Ollie Queen, but that’s for a different time and a different place.  I’m here to review a comic.  Not embarrass myself on the Internet.

This issue finds Winick picking up from where he left the last issue.  The fanboys on this site talked about just how awesome that issue finished up.  In a rise of anger, Ollie looks at the reader while speaking to Dinah, saying, “Get me my damn bow!”  It was awesome.  But this issue finds our intrepid hero playing more detective than bowhunter.

And this is where I find some issue with the story that’s going on.  It’s not that it was bad per se, but I just wanted something else.  What suddenly seemed interesting and intriguing throughout the last issues concerning Connor’s shooting came off merely as a “meh” plot point in this one.  And while the action was plentiful toward the end of the issue, I stared at the last panel wondering if this was really where I had hoped the series would go.

I think it’s something you need to see to believe, but somehow, in just one issue, Winick has me questioning just what the hell this series is going to be about.  It went from being a great story about a great hero and his friends as they try to figure out who shot his son to a story about…well, I really don’t want to spoil it.  It’s definitely one of those things that you don’t see coming, yet you’re just not sure if it’s all that satisfying to begin with.

In regards to the art, Chiang again rocks.  It’s almost a shame that he’s leaving the book, but his style is just so great and really compliments what’s going on in the issues so well.

Am I going to drop this book?  No, no I won’t.  But it’s been put in that precarious place of having to prove itself to me because, well, I can only buy so many books a week.  My hope is that I’m overreacting and that I’ll be proved wrong in the coming months.  Most likely, I’ll be writing another review 5 months from now, badgering people for not reading this book.  But for now, you can mark me down as cautiously optimistic.

  1. Man Cruchses are not embarrising the following article as evidence:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/06/08/POP.TMP?g=true

The article is a little old, but there’s nothing wrong with having a man crush on Ollie.  I just want to have a beer with the guy.

I wish I could afford to pick this book up but I just don’t have the room.

  2. I’ve been thinking about this book a little bit more this morning, and I think that what really bugs me about the story is that it went from having all sort of emotional, impactful moments to just being silly.  I just don’t think I was expecting this change in tone.  Maybe next month, I’ll be a better place for this to wow me.

  3. I definitely don’t know how I feel about that last page.  I was like "Oh, we’re going that way now?"

I’m not against the silly moments.  The series in it’s first issue with the Amazons were hilarious and well balanced but this issue seemed to be trying a little too hard.  The quips and dialogue were a little painful at times.

I’m giving this book the benefit of the doubt that it will pick up and be something interesting.  That last page has me scratching my head.

  4. Also, how totally awesome is that cover!?
