The last time I mentioned on this site that I found Dave Sim’s writing completely sexist, I was accosted as taking the opinion of the masses, but not understanding his work. So, let me take a different approach.

No one can argue that Alan Moore has a beard. It’s in pictures. It’s undeniably there. So let’s call Dave Sim’s view on women Alan Moore’s beard. He clearly has a view on women. If you’ve read any of his recent work, you know, he has a view. You, personally, may not think that beard is scraggly. You may find it sexy. Lush. Pert. But when you look at it, you have to know that a majority of people are going to find it scraggly looking.

I find Alan Moore’s beard scraggly. And I find Glamourpuss an unreadable mess of woman hating. You are free to disagree with me. But note that all these women are labeled things like “Wall-Street Jezebel” and “ditz-otron”. They are identified as having “no brain activity”. Every woman in this comic is a shallow, brain dead drug addict. There’s even a Zatanna parody who talks and acts nothing like Zatanna. In fact, she talks like a poorly written Thor. I guess that could be funny if Sim were satirizing Sif or Valkyrie.

The point of this comic series, based on the very one note joke covers of cross eyed super models, is that fashion magazines are stupid. I’m not sure why this premise needs twenty-four issues devoted to it.

So why did I pick this up?

1.) The cover gives the impression the series is in trouble and might be ending soon. The fact that no one in this store buys it, and that we received seven free copies (which is more than twice the number we regularly order) verifies that this series is in trouble. I wanted to see if there was a reason to save it.

I think there is.

Once you trudge through the awful misogyny of the main story, Sim writes about true incidents in comic culture. Ron talked about one of them in a podcast a little over two years ago (I think.) These stories are great. Factual, I presume, accounts of real creators and their unusual lives. I would gladly pay three dollars a month for just these stories. But I can’t bring myself to support someone with such a boner for one-dimensional woman hating.

I wish Dave Sim would trust that his stories about creators would be enough of a draw that he didn’t have to staple them to the back of the affront to comics that he thinks are the main appeal of his audience.

I’m giving the writing a two, because I believe the back story is worth a four, and the front is a zero. It does not merit being called poor.

Is there someone out there who’s enjoying the fashion portion of the Glamourpuss comics? If so what appeals to you? What is it about Alan Moore’s beard that seems like it’s a good idea.

  1. Hi Akamuu, you make some great points here and whilst I’m not aware your previous accosting regarding this series on this site I have decided to put together my own thoughts and feelings on the series and post them as a review also. (it was a really slow day at work and this kept me busy, most of what is based on recall alone so you will have to excuse me if my facts are off)

    • I replied. Also, I meant to give the art on this a four, not a three. He’s usually five star art all the way, but some of the shadowy fashion panels didn’t read as well for me as I think he intended.

    • Hit reply too fast again: “I replied on your review page. Thanks so much for the response. It was, by far, more than I expected. May all your future work days be slow but financially abundant. Also….(see above comment)”

  2. Thanks mate 😀
The day ifanboy gets a “edit post” function will be a great day for my dyslexix ass.

    • To be fair, you know the second iFanboy instituted an edit button the trolls would say ridiculous things, then, when called out on their statements, edit them away and claim anyone criticizing them was making things up.

I hate the lack of edit button, and yet, I am glad that an edit button doesn’t exist. Viva la logical conundrum!
