So many writers in the comic book industry take really exciting concepts and weave fairly dull or uninspiring stories around them, that it’s refreshing when someone takes something very basic and writes some heart into it.  That’s what Max Brooks is doing with GI Joe Heart and Minds.  Each story is a peek into the mind of a major GI Joe character*.  You don’t get their whole history, just one scene that encapsulates who they are.

Granted, it helps that Brooks’s stories are brought to life by Chaykin and Fuso, whose art is, well, art.  Framable art.

*-this was not an attempt to cleverly play off the title, it just sort of happened that way.

  1. There is a great art pairing on this book, and it makes me wonder what the classic Marvel series might’ve looked like had Chaykin penciled it.
