I picked up an issue of GI Joe Origins a while back because it had art by Ben Templesmith, and I wanted to see what a Templesmith GI Joe comic would look like.  And while I did enjoy the art, I thought the story was inexcusably trite and awful.  I haven’t picked up a GI Joe comic since.

This week, I saw that Chaykin had done the art for an issue, so I picked it up.  I’m familiar with who Max Brooks is, but I haven’t read his books.  I will now.  Brooks has an almost poetic way of condensing tha language to an absolute minimum in this issue.  He tells the bare bones of his story through dialog and internal monologue, while letting Chaykin’s art in the first story, and Fuso’s in the second, do most of the work.

This is a fantastic glimpse into Major Bludd and Spirit.  And it makes me wish there were more issues by this same creative team.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. Have you read GI Joe Cobra or Corbra II (now ongoing)? Great Chaykin covers, Fuso art and writing from Costa and Gage. Amazing stuff!

  2. I bought the Cobra Trade Paperback, but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.  I plan on rectifying that soon.

  3. This was farking fantastic.  Really enjoyed the shit out it!
