Garth Ennis clearly loves his war stories and the Night Witches miniseries is great unknown little true life story that is in good hands with him. Unearthing this nugget is probably the best part of the miniseries and is to Ennis' credit that he's done all of his research in getting the facts out there and realizing the story for us, the readers. This last issue wraps up the story a little too quickly for me, but that's only a gripe because I wanted to know more about these characters and their struggle within the larger picture, the war. Ennis tugs on our emotional strings by forcing us to endure the hardships and ultimately sympathize with one of the Nazi soldiers on the ground. This little twist makes it all the more shocking when we see what happens to him as one of the "Night Witches" is gunned down and he tries to save her from the rest of his troop. I like that Ennis never has us rooting for one side over the other, but instead presents us with a broad picture of how horrible war is and how it corrupts everyone equally. It's not a pretty sight (though the art is wonderful), but it's not supposed to be. I can't wait for the next story.
