“What the fuck!?”

This was what came out of my mouth after reading this issue (surprise, surprise).

“You call this a final issue?”

Let’s backtrack for a second here, Frankenstein started out as a third rate B.B.R.D with art that boarded on shitty – but I stuck around cause I love Jeff Lemire and was interested to see where he was taking this series. And I’m glad I did because he didn’t disappoint, and things started to “gel” by issue 6 and I began to fall in love with the Creature Commandos. Lemire instilled each character with a distinct personality and played up the team dynamics beautifully. This was a great comic and even Ponticelli’s art was growing on me and getting better issue to issue.

But DC pulled the plug and took Lemire off the title and sent him off to write Justice League Dark and the new Constantine comic – and that’s when things went sour.

Take a look at that cover to the left there – how appropriate, Frankenstein riding a bomb down to the ground. This comic fell like a bomb and Frankenstein deserved a better then this. This final issue is atrocious. All the spirit is gone from the book and the final story plays out like an episode of Scooby Doo. The art was phoned in and by the time you reach the last page you are glad you don’t have to look at it anymore. But I was also sad that this title ended on such a sour note.

This comic ended not with a bang but with a whimper.

See you around Franky.

  1. Ponticelli art is what I felt made this book so great. I loved this final issue, Frank went out like a bad ass at the end. I had fun reading this issue and I’m disappointed it was cancelled.
