I picked this series based upon a recommendation for my comic shop, and my relationship has with it has shifted from excitement to boredom.  I wasn’t sure if I should even get this third issue, but I decided to pick it up and I found myself pleasantly surprised.  Let’s get this out of the way:  this was not the strongest mini.  While the first issue did a nice job of establishing what was going on and hooked me with the promise of magic, the second issue dragged with way too much explanation, very little action, and a sense that the writer needed 6 issues to tell his story as opposed 3.  It seemed as if this one had gone off the rails because the story was trying to hard to make sense and not enough time having fun with the magical side of the side universe.  The third issue brings everything together in a really nice package.   I really liked how the story brought elements from the second issue and brought relevancy to the story at hand.  I also liked how this third issue seemed to bring more focus to the story, bringing to spotlight to the main character and her father instead of the wide spread magic users that the second issue bounced around to.  The story finished cleanly, and there were some nice moments in the end along with a couple surprises that you wouldn’t expect.  The art in this series has been ok, but I really enjoyed most of it in this issue.  There’s a two page spread in particular that I thought was rather lovely that showed Atlanteans and Amazonians fighting.  The action was solid and the art told the story well.  Besides a couple panels and the two page spread, there was, again, a lack of anything really special.  But it delivered the story cleanly and I was never confused.  Overall, I’m pleased I checked this series out, even though it may not be the brightest Flashpoint star.

Story: 4 - Very Good

  1. I totally disagree.  I thought it was terrible.  And corney.
