I’m still far from an expert on Flash history.  And until Johns’s Rogue’s Revenge mini during Final Crisis, I didn’t care to know much about The Flash.  Because of that, I’m at more of a loss on this title than any other that I’m currently reading.  And, while I thought the series might win me over, I feel like this is going to fill the “Red Hulk” slot of the DCU for me.

Basically, I acknowledge that the comic sets out what it’s intended to do, it just isn’t for me.  I don’t give a shit about The Flash, any more than I do about The Hulk.  I can stomach the occasional really good arc (Planet Hulk, Rogue’s Revenge), and I enjoy their personalities when they’re mixed in team settings, but they don’t hold my interest enough to warrant reading their comics every month.

Also, the art felt…very DC 80s.  This was probably done with purpose, but, again, that’s not my favorite style.

  1. It seems to be the case for this site at least….But people who hate or are indifferent of this comic is because of their lack of knowledge or love for Flash. That wasnt the full case for me, but your with a couple of people now who acknowledge they dont know what is going in this comic.

I hope that is a fair thing to point out 🙂

  2. Well, to be fair, I’m a huge Flash fan and I haven’t been all that happy with this book so far. I also wouldn’t use this comic to gage whetehr the Flash is for you in general. I would recommend Mark Waid’s first run on the Flash and Geoff Johns’ Flash stuff with Scott Kollins. Also, for some great Barry Allen stories, check out the six-issue mini, Flash and Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold by Mark Waid, Tom Peyer and Barry Kitson.

  3. @llash: I"ll check out those recommendations, thanks!  I’m basically assuming that The Flash might not be fore me, based on how much I love Johns’s work.  This is the first title with his name on it that I’ve felt let down on, so I’d really hoped it was me, and not the comic.

@TNC:  I"m not alone!  I’m not alone!  (I’m so very very alone)  I should clarify that I understand all the plot points, and the panel to panel, I don’t understand why I should care.  There seem to be all these monumental moments in character development, and I just think to myself, "Huh, a bowtie.  O….k.  Hey look, it’s yet another speedster in a Flah-like suit.  Impulse?  Reverse Flash?  The Flasher?  Zippy?  Zoomzoom?  Sppedy Gonzales?  How many of these guys are there?  Are they like, The Speed Lantern Corps?  Hey, The Corps! I should go read Green Lantern Corps, where I actually care what’s going on."

  4. ^Hey, I understand the bowtie thing, and even I don’t care about it. To some little touches like that might equal mindblowing revelations, but to me this whole series seems like an exercise in how long a creative team can coast on hype and past accomplishments. It’s not bad, but it’s the definition of average, from what I can see. Akamuu, I always appreciate your early reviews, and even if sometimes I wish you’d write more about "why" you rated the comics the way you did (X-Men Forever is just "bad", Uncanny is just "anti-climactic"), I usually end up rating them about the same. Much respec’ for what you do.

  5. My "Johns isn’t perfect" revelation came about during Legion of Three Worlds, which many people enjoy. Just not for me. But this I like.

  6. @akamuu

There are a bunch of Speedsters.  Just like there are a bunch of Lanterns, a bunch of Thanagarians, a bunch of Amazons.  There’s a whole planet of Kryptonians these days.

Not liking the book is fine, but discounting the Flash family will keep you from some fantastic stories.

  7. Thanks, Flapjaxx.  Now that my bosses are paying me to review comics, I’ll have more time to write more thorough reviews.  I just don’t like giving away spoilers, even if there’s warnings.  The odds of someone having read the titles before me are fairly slim.

@FACE, I haven’t read LoTW yet, as I wasn’t too into Final Crisis.  But it’s on my list.

@savinglala: I don’t discount that some of the stories are good, they’re just not for me.  Apart from Rogue’s Revenge, none of the Flash stories I’ve read appeal to me.  Again, I’m not saying they’re bad, they just hold no appeal for me.

  8. I loved the "I don’t give a shit about the Flash" line.  I did say while reading this at one point  "man fuck Barry Allen and all this shit"  But I did read on and do want to see it through.

  9. This mini is receiving similar criticism as RIP and Final Crisis. "I don’t know what’s going on."
