This is going to come off as a hateful and extremely nit picky review(which it is), but I don’t mean it to be.  I am enjoying mini a lot so far.  I have complete faith in Johns as a writer and no one can doubt Van Sciver’s talent as and artist.

Having said that, I hate the way Van Sciver shows Barry and Walley’s speed.  The lightning and blur that seem to stretch a block behind them as they run makes me wonder what it looks like to the characters in the book.  If they see it the same way we do, I don’t understand how Iris and Barry’s old boss would not have seen him enter the house. I mean even if its only a spilt second, you would still notice lightning right? I guess what really brought this on was the splash page after Barry leaves Hal.  The lightning seething from Barry’s body doesn’t seem to match up to his movements or any part of his body, its just a mess of lines and points.

Normally this would not bother me at all, but in a book that looks this good and with art that is as brilliant as it has (look at Iris’ hair when she mets Barry for the first time, it’s blowing because of the thunderstorm approching, I think that is amazing detail) small things like this become akin to a fumanchu painted on to Jesus in The Last Supper painting.  All of the other speedsters seem to get speed lines and blurs which look great, Why is it that the two young Flashes are lightning conjuring monsters that could be seen from counties away? I’m sure its to show that they are so much more in tune with the speed force and faster than everyone else, but franky  I dont like the way it looks.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. But the art gets a 5?

  2. I think everything else look amazing, it seems unfair to dock it.

  3. Ah I see. Thanks for clarification!
