The Flash has finally returned to store shelves after a brief delay.  After finishing the issue, I hate to say that I have some gripes about what’s going on with this series.  First off, let me start by saying that I have loved this series.  I bought the HC the week it came out, and I’ve read through it a couple times already.  Those first six issues were some next level stuff.  Ever since the title has shifted to Flashpoint, I feel like it’s lost a little bit of the magic that it once had.  As the main book for the upcoming summer event, why does it feel like there’s no energy building for the event itself?  Not only was this issue late (which means that the rest of the Flash stuff is going to be all out of whack for the event), but there was absolutely nothing in this issue to get excited about.  The delays with the storytelling have taken me out of the momentum of the issues events.  I was flipping through the pages reading just another drawn out explanation that did nothing to further my knowledge of what’s going on.  Add to that a subplot between Barry and Bart that seemed to come out of nowhere (or at least, I don’t remember that stuff being a problem for them), and I’m left scratching my head as to why I should care about any of this.  I’m assuming that this issue was meant to be a set up for the upcoming mystery, but considering the series only has 2 more issues to wrap up this arc, I’m left wondering where the excitement is.

As for the art, Manapaul continues to be solid.  Let me just say this: if the book is being delayed by the art, I don’t understand why that is.  There is absolutely nothing that’s totally “wow” in this issue like there was in previous issues.  It’s a pretty standard issue with mostly talking heads and little action.  I know that Manapaul’s art is worth the wait, but if I’m going to wait, I guess I want to be blown away by at least something in the issue.  To me, this seemed to lack something special.  And again, as the flagship book going into this summer’s event, shouldn’t there be something special about it?

I’m sure my opinion is in the minority, which fine.  I am going to stick with the book despite my complaints because the art is gorgeous, and Johns rarely lets me down (even if he can be a little decompressed with his storytelling).  Here’s hoping that next issue brings the funk and the noise.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Totally agree…Even though this arc is leading into a major event, I never got a sense of that as I was reading.  I’m not getting the “prelude to event” vibe that I expected, although I guess they still have two issues to ramp up the excitement and anticipation.

  2. I agree with you on both counts (great art, boring story) and to be completely honest…from the angle this seems to be going, I was expecting way more from Johns. I absolutely hate the idea of the “multiverse” I think it is a comic writer cop-out and a way to put a stupid twist on a story by somehow involving the same character from universe -insert number here- It really makes me angry when a creative team can’t come up with something more original, especially with geoff johns track record. The early issues are strong, and although I think I’m going to hate flashpoint I’ll keep picking it up and reading because once I start a book I can’t skip issues, I like to have full runs. Hopefully something good will come of this or else I’ll just tough it out till flaming motorcycle Barry is gone (stupid idea)

  3. I wonder if some of the “so what” feeling surrounding this book is the fact that Flashpoint is almost here.  If this book had come out in January when it was supposed to, we would not have had so many previews or teasers for the Flashpoint titles by that point.  As a consequence, the titel would have had more impact and expectations would have been lower.

  4. i do agree…i was wondering why they spent so much page space on seemingly simple scenes. Yeah it was basically a 3 for me, which is very forgettable.

  5. Yea, kinda lame on two points:  the Barry from the future not wanting any help from the Barry from the past, that didn’t make any sense; and Barry not wanting Bart to help, not very gracious and unlike Barry actually I think.

Thought the revelation that there’s a Speed Force based enemy trying to destroy reality is intriguing, and I like multiverse stuff actually, so am looking forward to this now after I didn’t think I would be so much initially.

The Kubert drawn Flashpoint stuff I’m esp looking forward to.
