Traitorous Guardians? New Corps? Cuddly Kitty of Death? Oh, my! As the unofficial "Geoff Johns month" at iFanboy comes to a close, the prolific writer makes what might very well be my pick of the month. Rage of the Red Lanterns might not have the death of Pa Kent or a Kryptonian punching a whale, but good f--king Lord was that issue awesome.
Let me first mention Shane Davis, the artist for this little diddy. I have no clue who the heck this guy is, but he's a really good artist. He has that Ivan Reis quality to him that's very crisp and shiny, but there's a lot of really striking images here and some really good pacing. Particularly in mind is that sequence when Arx is talking to Sinestro and in the very next panel, most of his head is already taken off by the ambushing party's ray. I also really like all of his shots of Atrocitus and of the corrupted Guardian. There's a level of detail and energy in both that I kept being really impressed by. I hope this guy gets more work in the future because he knocked it out the park here.
The story is pretty solid as well. There's a lot of little things that are being sprinkled throughout the issue until most converge into that last scene. For 30 or so pages, I'm left wondering how the heck Johns gave so much information and then connected it all in such a short time. It's really pretty frickin' spectacular. From the rise of the Red Lanterns to Hal's mixed feelings about Sinestro's oncoming execution to the corrupted Guardian's secret betrayal, we're getting a whole lot here. We're also seeing in the background the formation of the Sapphires, the Orange Lanterns, and the Blue Lanterns. That's a lot of story to juggle, but somehow Geoff does and does it in a way that nothing seems to come out of nowhere. In fact, all of these splinter corps so far have their own connections to Green Lantern mythos from years past which is pretty amazing. Geoff Johns is not human, I tells ya!
Between really good art and really good writing, this is a really good issue. Really really good. The only flaw I might see here is perhaps the "Final Crisis" banner despite the fact that the only connection is that Disassembled-esque "hey, did you hear that thing over there?" lip service but even that's minimal. This issue was incredible in every which way. I submit you should pick this up now if you haven't. It's a fantastic starting point to get involved with one of the best books out today. To quote Conan: and if you do not listen to me, THEN TO HELL WITH YOU!!!
No, but, seriously, go buy the book.
