What did I just read?

The art was very good, Mahnke should’ve done this series from issue one. He was able to handle all the chaos in this issue and do it without causing a shipping delay. I cant imagine how long it would’ve taken J.G. Jones to just try and finish this issue. So yes the art alone in this book is gorgeous.

But as a Morrison apologist I have to ask again…..

What the fuck did I just read?

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I think you and I read different issues compared to the rest of the population.

I too loved the art, hated the writing.

  2. It’s funny, I defended this series for the other 6 issues. I loved every moment of them and I still think this was 1,000x better then Secret Invasion.

But because I didnt read Superman Beyond, I got lost within the first few pages and I just didnt enjoy it. Still better ending then SI though…

  3. @ TheNextChampion …There was my downfall also! I regrettably didnot pick up those Superman Beyond issues(thought the 3D angle was too gimicky!) It’s probably necessary to grasp the whole monitor angle abit better. I thought the build up was better than the finale BUT I was pleased w/Manhke’s work

  4. @Champ — I never thought I’d day this about a Final Crisis review written by you, but — I totally agree.

PS – Now you know how I felt, the whole series. 😛

  5. *say

  6. HA! TNC’s a convert!

  7. Story:1 Art: 2.5/3

Someday there’ll be a big deconstruction of FC that will explain this. Then I might care. But the fact that this needs one to "get it" makes it an inferior product.

Grant Morrison. Phooey. Genius my ass.

  8. @RobAbsten   Thank you, Thank you. I heard for an encore Gmo’s going to print afollow up story, it’s 32 pages cost 3.99 and contains all blank sheets in which we imagine en exciting engrossing story with a solid complete ending, everything happens off panel, off issue

    (sorry G.Mo. fans couldn’t resist)

  9. I converted for a split second….now I understand everything. This was a fantastic issue and I am a Morrison apologist again.

    *waves Morrison pennent*

  10. Pick a side dammit!

  11. Wait, in the FC thread proper you what you tell us you understood is the basc plot. Is that "everything"? If so, that’s not much. Also, this is the sort of ridiculousness that irks me. Here we have a reviewer who is quite upset that this book makes it’s basic plot points difficult to decipher. Upon re-read, what is understood are those very plot points. So the reward for a re-read is the comprehension of the story beats. Any other writer in comics would get eviscerated for doing the same, but in this case it causes the reviewer to change his score from 1 to 5?

Sometimes G-Mo fans are more confounding than the work they blindly praise.

    Translation: Your bias is showing.

  12. @JJ: It is? (covers self)

Then again your bias for hating this story has shown since issue four….so what are you complaining about? I read the issue over again and I understood it more. Sorry if that’s a problem that I re-read something. Guess that should be a rule that no one re-reads their issue to either love it or hate it more.

  13. Translation of above comment: "I know you are but what am I?"

  14. Wow … I don’t even know what to say … from a 1 to a 5 on a re-read, & even the art impoved score??? Well, at least you admit you are biased & a Morrison apologist.

  15. At least you didn’t need to read anything else besides SI to understand it. The way Marvel sets up it’s events is: if you want to read about SI, you get that book. If you want to read about how the invasion effects Ms. Marvel or Captain Brit, then you get their tie-ins for a detailed account on how they feel and what they’re going through because of it. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ ANY TIE-INS TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN STORY. That is utter garbage that DC set this story up like that, and I’ll bet they didn’t even throw in a "continued in Superman Beyond" at the end of #6 ether. I have some serious issues with your review too. 5 stars for a book that you couldn’t understand? If anyone can read a story and love it, even though they don’t understand it, then maybe Grant Morrison really is a genius. "cough, bullshit, cough cough"

Honestly, I’ll take a well writen story like SI, even if the ending felt rushed and anti-climatic, over a collection of words and panals that make no sense what so ever any day.

  16. @wade: My art was a 5 to begin with….plus the writing went from a 2 to a 5.
