I want to be able to say this issue was good.  I really really do.  As you can see from my other reviews of the book, I’ve been loving this series so far.  However, sad to say, this issue stumbles a bit.  There’s some great moments but there’s a lot of construction problems here, too.  Specifically, characters and plot points from other books spontaneously pop up without any real explanation (if nothing else, asterisks would be nice) which makes things confusing and ill-concieved.  Also, you have really weird jumps in time that do nothing but confuse the heck out of you.  That being said, there are cool moments in this and there are interesting ideas happening.  The idea of the entire Multiverse uniting to save Earth Zero is neat.  The use of Superman, Luthor, and others is nice.  The epilogue is a good touch.  The art is pretty good, though JG Jones finishing out would have been nice.  Nevertheless, I can appreciate the fact that this came out two weeks after the last issue.  Overall, I think this series did alright though this issue was a bit of a stumble.  The ending doesn’t quite ruin my love of this series, which has been great throughout in my opinion and it does have its good parts, but this is most definitely the weakest of the series.

UPDATE: I’ve reread this thing a few more times since I wrote this review and I will say I’m satisfied with it than before.  It doesn’t change the storytelling flaws, but I do better appreciate what is on the page.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I think an ending can make or break a story (in any format) so even though I wasn’t loving Final Crisis up until this issue, I had some (VERY small) hope that the final issue could wrap up the story in some way that tied it all together & make sense of the rest of the series. Instead, the ending was the most confusing & nonsensical of the whole series … and that’s saying a lot.

  2. ahh but we had Captain Carrot!

  3. I don’t understand why some readers evidently refused to spend a LITTLE (more?) time reading online FC annotations, which they evidently could have benefited from greatly, but instead decided to spend a LOT of time typing over and over about how FC is "nonsensical".

  4. @flapjaxx I for one did, and I love those sites that break down the panel by panel and quotes and wikki’d everything.  This "event" wasn’t for me BUT I liked the build up& good moments more than the finale.

In your mind was this a satisfying read/DCU event? Was it accessible to you?

  5. Listen, I’m not saying I hated this at all.  I didn’t love it like the last six issues but I thought it was decent.  Like I said in the review, I think Final Crisis as a whole was good and that there were good parts to this.  I just thought this issue was the weakest.

  6. Jesse1125 – What’s Terry Pratchett doing writing for Final Crisis?

  7. flapjaxx if I have to spend time reading online annotations to make sense of a story, then its not worth reading.  I tried going online to follow along..first two issues, I tried..but it got so convulated I just gave up and thought it would make sense in the end..IF I JUST READ THE THING.   It didnt.
