Catching up on this series once again shows me how great of a run Jonathan Hickman is doing. He’s really making each character stand out, maybe not so much as a family, but showing why each member of the Four are great. Last issue showed a lot of shit go down and it’s really hard to see how it’s all going to get fixed but more importantly: who specifically is going to die. With this new issue…..it’s really more of the same.

This issue really is just Hickman piling more and more horrible stuff for the Four to deal with. Reed is about to get swallowed up by Galactus, under the ocean Namor is making Sue’s life a living hell, and the rest of the family has to deal with Annihilus getting to their Phantom Zone gate. Although it feels like more of the same from last issue, Hickman still makes this fun to read with nice interactions with various characters. Reed dealing with the Nu-Zone people (still shocked we’re dealing with Mark Millar’s ideas here), Sue and Namor discussing their implications, and Johnny being Johnny is everything Hickman can handle. There are some weird moments in here that made me stop for a second. I mean, it’s not everyday I see Reed Richards say ‘Cool’ like a teenager. But overall it’s still a tense story and (as obvious from the arc’s title) it’s only going to end in tragedy.

Steve Epting is still bringing in some great Jack Kirbyesque like stuff in this arc. Lots of Kirby dots and action sequences in here that really make this as an ‘homage’ to a Kirby Fantastic Four issue. But you still see a lot of Epting’s own work into each page so it’s a weird merge of the two artists in this issue. Not saying that if I would rank the two that Epting would be on the same level as Kirby…..but hey, Epting is a great artist in his own right.

We’re still going towards the tragedy of one of the Four dying and I still have no idea who is going to die. Jonathan Hickman and, to an extent, Marvel have hidden this death very well from the public. Hickman is telling a great story with great characterization and interactions with everyone involved. Plus you have Epting drawing a gorgeous looking book with lots of Kirby references throughout. God I can’t wait for the next issue!!…..But this issue was still pretty good if you’re interested.
