Wow, Reed Richards is a dick.

Jonathan Hickman, however, is not.

I have been reading this title specifically for Hickman, because I’ve enjoyed a lot of his creator owned work.  The Nightly News being my all-time favorite limited series.  But I’ve never cared for The Fantastic Four.  I don’t wish the title failure, like I do with Youngblood or Image United, but I’ve never been able to properly get into the 616 version of the F4.  I tried during Millar’s run, but I thought that Death Of The Invisble Woman storyline was insulting.  And I’ve tried with Hickman’s run, and enjoyed quite a few issues, but I’m not invested in these characters.  In order to keep each issue self-contained, Hickman is forced to rush his plots and throw a lot of science at you.  I completely understand how that’s intriguing to people.  But it’s not my cup of thermally enhanced water beverage derived from leaves.

Also, it’s time for someone to write Franklin back out of his eternal youth.  He was ever so briefly interesting in the eighties, and I’d love to see them really tap back into his powers again.

I certainly didn’t envy Edwards having to pick up after Eaglesham’s departure.  But, while he’s certainly no Eaglesham, he’s also no Terry Dodson.  The book still looks pretty good, if a little sketchy-faced in places.

Story: 3 - Good

  1. "and I’d love to see them really tap back into his powers again."

He has. In the Dark Reign tie-in mini he shot Norman with a toy gun and was able to make a real bullet come out, and in his birthday issue, it ended with him creating a pocket universe with his bare hands.

  2. I didn’t read the Dark Reign tie-in.  But maybe I’ll check it out.  I hope Hickman further explores that avenue.

  3. The way the book is going, there is a lot of convergance of storylines that is going to be happening in the several issues preceeding this. Franklin’s power seems to be something that will happen in the course of these next few issues.

I agree with your point that it seems like Hickman has to rush stuff and he does throw ridiculous science terminology at the reader if only to verbally masturbate himself. But that’s Hickman, he always kind of wants everyone to see how smart he and his books are.

  4. "But that’s Hickman, he always kind of wants everyone to see how smart he and his books are. "

    That’s mighty presumptuous of you.

  5. @vadamowens:  I love Hickman’s work, but I think SummerSleep is probably right that "he always kind of wants everyone to see how smart he and his books are."  There isn’t a single Hulk book on his resume.  He seems to pick books that will let him play with fantastical concepts and really intelligent characters.

@SummerSleep: I’m excited about that impending arc, then.

  6. Ok, how the fuck can you assume that?  I’m sorry to get irritated, but lets look at how long he’s been working at Marvel.  He’s not been in the business long enough to be put on heavily profitable titles.  It really doesn’t matter if either of us are right or wrong, I just really have no idea how the hell you or summersleep could make such a grand statement.  I find find that slightly arrogant…with as much humility as I can provide at the moment.

  7. …all infintile aggression put aside, I think it’s time I took a leave of absence from this title.  He’s creating way too many ‘potential’ stories and making things relatively confusing for a ‘first glance’. I’ve really had high hopes that Hickman could eclipse the Millar run, but Millar made it more accessable to people like me that haven’t been reading FF for 20 years.  It sucks because I really like the characters, but I can’t justify spending the money on this title for now.

  8. @vadamowens: You can assume pretty much anything at any time.  I’m basing the "smart book" statements on his Image work, all of which is pretty high concept.  I don’t think there’s anything right or wrong about "writing smart", I’m just agreeing with summersleep that it seems to be his goal.

I also understand taking some time off from this title.  Apart from being interested in the Franklin potential, I’m not really connecting to this title for smarter or dumb.

  9. Well, of course, I understand that you can assume anything at any time.  What I’m saying is, that to make such an assertion, normally one would want to provide proof for said assertion/assumption.  We don’t know these people personally and I feel it unfair to do so.  I mean, whatever…it’s not like its going to ruin this gorgeous fucking weekend or the fact that I’ve got 2 months and 3 weeks of paid vacation starting next week.  I just think there needs to be actual fact backing a statement like that.  I’m a historian.  Assuming get’s you a failing grade on your thesis:)
