I suddenly feel the need towrite a counterpoint to the generally negative reviews posted for this final issue of the run. I#m afraid I kind of loved it, and I was never an FF fan before this past few months. First, let's get the art out of the way. From what I understand, Hitch's absence was not his fault, and the man they've got to replace him here is, as we all know by now, no slouch at all. Immonen's ever-flexible pencil line fits nicely alongside Hitch, but feels resolutely his own at the same time. I just love the flow he gives his work these days, and that panel of Sue and Debbie with the white background was priceless. With the amount of stuff he churns out, along with the fact that he's working on different characters all the time, Immonen deserves a medal. I mean there are pages here that look like he's channelling Simonson!
As for the story, I'd be the first to admit that last issue took a bit of a dip after the set up of parts one and two. However, I liked this resolution and thought it captured individual characters well, while providing action and derring do aplenty. Each of the FF plays their part, from Ben flying off on his own to kill Wyncham before realising he's not a murderer after all, to Reed providing the know how to defeat the Marquis (of course he does!). Maybe the explanation of Doom's survival and the apprentice's identity is a little pat, but I opt to view it as neat and tidy, as all such limited runs should usually be. Also, can't fail to mention the "interdimensional workout" double page spread. All those cosmic characters made the old school Marvel fan in me very happy indeed.
In the end though, it was the final third that really got to me. First, all those cameos were gold, especially Spidey whose contribution was really kind of spot on. Then finally Millar reminded me that he's not always all bombast and quick put downs. Three panels proved that fact in spades. The hug between Sue and Debbie was lovely, and then there was that last exchange between two old friends. Pitch perfect, straight for the heart. He nailed it for the end.
Art: 5 - Excellent
