Coming out of the Neil Gaiman/John Romita Jr. mini-series I was really excited for the launch of the ongoing Eternals series. And in the beginning, the Knuafs did a good job setting up an interesting and complex storyline. But as the issues went by it all started to fall apart. First the art got flaky then, starting into this last story arc, the writing started to feel rushed. With the last two issues it was obvious that loose ends were hurriedly being tied off in anticipation of the impending cancellation, and by the last page of issue #9 the collapse was complete. Sadly, it appears that it’s the fate of the Eternals to start strong and finish weak, as they seem incapable of sustaining a series long enough to allow an author to deliver a complete story befitting the grand scale of the subject matter. A while back I would have thought the first twelve issues of this series would have made a nice collected story. But now that it’s all done with issue #9, as it turns out, I wouldn’t recommend the final product to anyone. Very disappointing.
