So, I just got back from a little weekend vacation, literally, just about 20 minutes ago. While vacations are supposed to be fun and relaxing, we all know they have their bad points. Travel, dealing with hotel check in/out nonsense, tourists, traffic, this goddamn issue of Detective Comics, etc. ... Yeps. I took some comics with me, since my fiancees family is super religious, and actually put me in a totally different hotel, away from her. So last night, I got to reading my comics before I crashed. Scott Snyder, you are a son of a bitch. I am on the fence wondering if this book was just bad, or if Scott Snyder spoiled us f'ing rotten. This was bloody bizarre. I know things around the DCU are changing, but seemingly sexualizing Joker's crimes? Eh? We're going to have Batman rescue a 12 year old from a naked Joker? We're REALLY going to have one of the greatest villains, if not THE greatest ever go down this road? That's a complete cop out, and while yes, said deeds are dastardly, I really don't think it's in the realm of comic book supervillaindom. Batman was written pretty hokey. It was pretty rough at times. I mean All Star Batman and Robin rough. Yes, there was an "I am the terror that flaps in the night" moment. It's the new "I'm the goddamn Batman". The final splash page that people have talked about isn't "shocking" it isn't "daring" it isn't anything other than lowbrow grindhouse film over the top gore. If that's your thing, fine. I dig it too. Hobo With a Shotgun was awesome. The art though, was fantastic. I loved it. It is obviously Tony Daniel's strong point. Maybe he is spreading himself too thin with writing and art duties, but the art definitely far outclasses the story. This guy could draw Batman forever and I would love it. I haven't slept in days, I have a sunburn, and my feet are all f'ed up from sand getting in my shoes and rubbing them raw, I couldn't stay in the same hotel as the woman I love more than anything and want to spend the rest of my life with, and the drive from Atlanta through the Florida panhandle sucks ass, but this book was the worst part of my vacation.
