When I recommend Kirkman’s Invincible to people, I always tell them “The first trade is pretty good, but not Earth-shattering.  But everything after that is made of 100% awesome.”*  For that reason, I was willing to give Destroyer a second issue before I quit on it.  The first issue didn’t grab me at all.  In fact, I hated it.  A cliched story like “superhero (or cop, or fireman, or whatever) must hang up his cape or it will, literally kill him” needs some excellent writing and plot points.  The first issue didn’t have it.  The second one does.

I still want to know why the main character appears to be wearing a Skrull mask.

* = except for issue 60, but, you know after 59 good to excellent issues, you’re certainly allowed to make a mistake

Story: 4 - Very Good

  1. Interesting, But I’ll still wait till the end, and just pick up the trade, based on what I hear.

  2. The Destroyer was a Golden Age Marvel character. He wore a goblin mask to scare the bejeezus out of Nazis and other wrong-doers.
