When I first saw this in the Diamond box at work, I thought: “Kirkman writing for Marvel?  Does that mean Bendis won the debate?”*  Well, I don’t know who won the debate, but I do know in the Kirkman/Bendis writing well competition, Kirkman took a hit this week.

This has been a rough couple of months for me, Kirkman-wise.  I love Walking Dead, Invincible, his run on the Ultimate X-Men, Marvel Zombies.  I even really like Astounding Wolfman.  But the last issue of Invincible was disappointing, and this is…this is unnecessary.  A cliched story about a superhero who should hang up his cape or else he’ll, yawn, die.

Kirkman is an excellent writer, and should be able to take this trope in a different direction and wow the reader.  Instead, he hacks his way through this first issue with trite dialog, and two-dimensional characters.

I’m sorry I picked this one up.

*Last year Brian Michael Bendis and Robert Kirkman exchanged words (many of them “fuck you”) about how Kirkman believed that comic writers should get their start at DC and Marvel, and then move on to creator-owned titles, or smaller companies like Image.  Bendis disagreed.
