I had first heard about this book when Kirkman mentioned it in his WordBalloon interview a few months back. At the time, I remember stroking my chin and thinking, “Ah yes, a Marvel MAX series by Kirkman…and it’s drawn by Corey Walker! Score!” I’m happy to report that I was not disappointed by this issue. While the story itself is arguably unoriginal (it’s basically BRIT, but the main character is on the verge of death), I was completely taken by the books complete irreverence for just about, well, everything. I get the vibe from this first issue that this character is going to end up doing some horrible things, but yet there’s this sort of duality to it all because while he’s doing these horrible things, he’s doing it to horrible people. And so the question that this series will hopefully address is this: does that make it wrong? There is potential here for a somewhat deeper story to be wrapped in this action filled gore fest.

Probably the most attracting thing about this issue is Corey Walker’s art. That man can draw the hell out of a book. His pencils have definitely gotten tighter since his first issues with Invincible, and I love his simple style. The action in this book is dynamic, and he does a great job of drawing all of the unbelievably gory stuff that the character does. The colors in this book really do a great job of making the art pop off the page. Where Invincible’s colors were more muted, these colors really leap off the page, which makes this book so very visually pleasing.

This is not the greatest thing that Kirkman has ever written, but it’s definitely one of the more fun books I’ve read in a long while. I highly recommend this to fans of Kirkman, particularly those who are more interested in his inappropriate side.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I am waiting for the trade on this but just from your review I am positive I will enjoy it. Right now if Kirkman or Millar is writing something it is a lock for me.
