This was my first issue of Demo. It’s not a series that I’ve ever picked up before, not for the fact that I didn’t think that I would enjoy it, just that it was one of those books that I always figured that I’d get around to reading in trade. Well this was a light week for me, so I thought I would give it a shot, especially since this isn’t a series where you have to worry about continuity. It certainly sounded like a book that would be to my interest, with it being the one-shot stories and all that.

My first thought about this issue however, was disappointing, or somewhat worrisome to be more precise. I’m not a big fan of time travel stories, and this was one. I’ve never liked time travel, just for the fact that there can be so many plot holes, or just simply confusion in the story. This however, I think was handled rather well. The story wasn’t really about the time travel, and it was actually only used as a device to get a better look at the character, and who she was.

So the premise of this story was good but yet somewhat familiar, as I’m sure I’ve seen this kind of situation in other places. Thats not to say it wasn’t good, because it was. The story was well executed, and that’s what really matters in a comic to me. It was nice, and contained an interesting twist of things near the end of the issue. The only problem I had with it is that I was a bit lost on what was going on at a certain part. Now I won’t give away any spoilers, so I’m not going to say what it was about, but it simply was a part that dealt with her father. I’m pretty sure I understand it now, but at the time of first reading, it did have me a bit lost.

I thought the art was good on this issue, however I did notice that perhaps this wasn’t some of Cloonan’s best work, since the art in the preview of the next issue looks much better in my opinion. Now that’s not to say this art was bad, and I’m not saying that at all. It’s just that the art in next month’s preview looks to be a lot cleaner, as all the lines are darker, and more defined.

One last thing I wanted to say about this is that I really enjoyed the notes from Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan in the back. Like I said, I’m not familiar with this series, but I’m assuming that this is a feature in all the issues, and the notes and extras gave a bit of a personal touch to the issue, which I really liked. So overall, this was a really good issue, and it’s definitly a great read for those who had a light week and are looking for something else to pick up.
