Any comic that labels itself as a ‘team up’ book, like Marvel Team Up and Brave and the Bold, should be one of the best comics on the stand. Think about it. They involve stories outside (well mostly now anyways) continuity and you have free range to pick anyone to put together. Same goes for the creators because you can really put an interesting and talented team together to make a comic work. Sadly, Deadpool Team Up has lacked a lot of this for months now. It started off strong with its first issue with Hercules and Fred Van Lente/Dalibor Talajic working on it. But I think ever since then I haven’t enjoyed any of the issues and I dropped it months ago. Now though we have an interesting idea in play here with The Watcher (of all characters) teaming up with Deadpool.

Tom Peyer may not be a household name today but he’s done some pretty good work in the old days. He helped revive Hourman in his own series, he wrote a pretty good run of Legion of Superheroes, and he was a longtime editor for Sandman. Here he creates a pretty funny issue with the Watcher trying to deal with ‘watching’ Deadpool and Deadpool getting creeped out by him. There’s just a lot of great observations in terms of what the Watcher actually does and how pretty seedy his role in the Marvel U is. The whole premise of these two stuck in an elevator doesn’t last long but their entire interaction is really fun no matter where they’re at. Also we probably have one of the most disturbing moments in comics, at least for me, with the Watcher dispatching the alien menace in this. Let’s just say Rambo anit got shit on this guy.

Another name not familiar in the industry is Jacob Chabot. He’s drawn some random stuff like X-Babies, Spongbob Comics, and The Amazing Spider-Ham (see a trend?). It is a really cartoony style, almost to the point where Deadpool looks like a kid at points, but I do like it. It has an interesting mix of muted colors but having sharp inks to it. It really does look like a cartoon, maybe more of an adult cartoon on Adult Swim but a cartoon none the less. There is a lot of detail though in the backgrounds whether it be the streets of New York, or a very disgusting bathroom stall. Also, to bring the disturbing element here again, when he draws the Watcher handling the alien he made sure it was as gross as possible. It made it even more unbelievable what I just saw and he handled it perfectly.

I don’t think this would’ve been my pick of the week because Fantastic Four really took a punch to my gut hard. But this was just a lot of fun to read and it proves what I said earlier that if you have an interesting idea and creative team for a team up book, you can really do wonders with it. I’d love to see more of these two do of this series because of the great stuff they put in this. Sadly it looks like they aren’t going to be around for the next issue but there is another radical idea coming into play: Apparently he is going to become the Herald of Galactus…..Damn you Marvel!!
