With all of this hatred for Deadpool right now I think we need to close our eyes and look back. Specifically back in the year 2004 to be honest. As comic fans we all know what was big in 2004….Exactly! Cable and Deadpool!

People seem to forget just how insanely popular that title was. Granted I was a bit late to the party, but I cannot deny how amazing that series was to read. I wasn’t even a huge Deadpool or Cable fan when I read it. It was the great writing by Fabian Nicieza that made it an enjoyable title to read. Now, for all fans of past and present can enjoy maybe the ‘final’ time these two characters can meet.

I’m always iffy with Duane Swierczynski as a writer. Sometimes he does some great work, other times I could do without him. Here however, oh my god he is perfect for not only Deadpool; but for a revival of this series! He makes the banter between Cable and Deadpool work so well. I missed the old days of Deadpool having a person like Nathan to keep him in line. Like the old series, the team up makes very little sense, but when written well it works perfectly. Swierczynski in general writes a great Deadpool. His quips are funny, his ‘4th wall’ breaking is funny (loved that Sarah Palin joke), and overall he makes him an entertaining character to read. Now I am not a fan of Messiah Complex and it is a bit odd to have Deadpool be involved with the storyline. But with past history it works, and somehow it gels well with the event. So if anyone is confused on the idea of this actually happening (or continuity) I think it all works out.

Paco Medina, as always mentioned in my Deadpool reviews, is a great artist. I don’t know if its because of a different title, or he has different colorists/inkers involved….but I think this is his best work I’ve seen him do. Seriously. Everything looks so good in terms of layouts and character designs. Of course he is great at drawing Deadpool; but he does a great Cable, other X-men characters, hell even his Sentinals look great! I also think he does a great job with the pacing and reveals for this title. The one where Predator X comes in is a highlight and he handles the fight well. Basically if you wanna see how Deadpool the actual series looks (most of the time) every month…..This title will help you out.

When I got to the end of this and they showed the cover gallery for ‘Cable and Deadpool’ I got a bit nostalgic if I’m honest. This was a really great series and Duane Swierczynski shows why it is by writing a good story of mixing ‘Messiah Complex’ and the overall relationship between the two characters. Then Paco Medina comes in and makes it all the more sweeter by drawing a pretty damn good looking issue. Sadly I know a lot of people are going to miss out on this series for one reason: Deadpool.

All I ask of you guys is to just give this a shot. Yes he is an overused character, we get that. But Swierczynski shows us why Deadpool can be great if he’s written well. Hell he even made me like Cable a bit more. It also helps he liked to take a few shots of his Cable run in this….Basically I just ask to have an open mind and give this title a shot. You will enjoy it, I guarantee it.

  1. Thanks for the review.. can’t wait to read..  I agree.. C&D 2004 epic.

  2. I wholeheartedly Agree! The minute I realized Deadpool was being consistent I practically geekgasmed! He’s a wonderful character when written maturely. These other titles just make me vomit disappointment from the abuse of characterization. This is the deadpool I remember, and to be honest, it’s one of the fewer stories of deadpool I’ll recognize in-continuity.
