Everybody knows how much I love this series. It’s never been perfect mind you, but it has been consistantly the best Deadpool series to come out since the orgy of titles have been released. This current arc started promisingly enough, with Deadpool seemingly recruited into the Secret Avengers. Then we get to this issue…..

Again I know Daniel Way is not the greatest writer of all time. But he usually has a great grasp on telling a story and making it entertaining. Here though I was left scratching my head on to why Way rushed to quickly to get to where we are at the end. The beginning starts off well enough with Deadpool on his first mission with the team. But then we get revealed the actual truth of this story and who the antagonist is……and it feels so unimportant. There’s nothing dramatic about what is happening and things go to hell so quickly for the villain I feel like I’m missing a couple of pages. The core (or heart of this issue) with Deadpool fighting Rogers is pretty entertaining even if that feels rushed as well. Basically ‘rushed’ is the word that describes this issue on the writing.

The art though by Carlos Barberi; now that is some good comic book art. Barberi is getting better with each issue and this has some great panel layouts in here. I especially love the last two page spread where the characters are in the word ‘BONG’. I wasn’t expecting that splash page and some of the other pages as well were really fantastic. If there is anything that saves the issue from it’s ‘ho-hum’ writing it’s the amazing pages by Barberi.

So yes this was not a well written issue by Daniel Way. But don’t go out and think that suddenly this is a horrible series. This is just one bad issue in terms of writing out of twenty-eight issues. The art really saves this though as it is some of the best work by Carlos Barberi’s career. I hope there is some kind of payoff or reason for another issue of this arc though. Only because the ending seems already there with how Way ended this one.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent
