So, now we are at part two of the "Lady Bullseye" story. We've been presented to the character, a former child slave turned dangerous assassin after the killer she's named after slaughtered her captors and obstensively freed her as a little girl. We see as she's been contracted to neutralize Daredevil by the Hand, a task she's attempted to accomplish by framing Daredevil for murder. At the same time, Matt Murdock is now dealing with the ramifications of his betrayal to Milla, the night he spent sleeping with Dakota North. His problems are only compounded when the cops come by to arrest him for the murder.
I'm kind of torn on how to feel about this particular story. On paper, it's really tight and well-done. Brubaker and returning Lark are doing the kind of quality and intrique that's per usual of Daredevil. The introduction of the Black Tarantula and Iron Fist are really interesting as well as indicative of how I wish Brubaker was still doing Immortal Iron Fist. Lark's pencils are as gritty and pulpy as ever. The action is well-paced and the dialogue is spendid. It's really everything you want from a Daredevil story.
However, there's still the Matt/Dakota plot thread. I understand a lot of people really don't care that Matt's cheated on Milla, mostly due to their frustration with the marriage in general, but it still puts a black mark in my enjoyment of the book. Yes, Matt probably shouldn't be married, even I'll admit tha, but to treat it as non-existant simply out of Milla's tenue in an asylum truly sticks in my craw. Of particular note is how it feels, to me, if Matt were capable of this, I feel like it would have happened during the Black Widow story a few years back or somewhere around there. I don't buy that Matt would simply do this, especially after Milla being on his mind 24/7 only a few issues back. I understand Matt is a world-renowned man-whore but the man's got boundaries and this crosses it for me. Granted, Matt's reaction feels appropriate self-infuriating, but the fact that it happened in the first place is simply bothersome given my general rule of rebuffing most adulterous superheroes in comics.
Like I said with last issue, it remains to be seen whether my misgivings over the Dakota situation will be resolved. The fact that the rest of the book remains top-notch allevates that if only a little. However, it may soon come to the crossroads that Matt being a two-timing husband now is simply too much for him to respect the character anymore. I hope it doesn't come to that because it's been a great book.
Art: 5 - Excellent
Great review as always Tork. I agree with you on the quality of the book. I think the Dakota/Matt thing will play out in your favor. Just looking at the dialogue and character reactions, it’s obvious that Matt reflects a lot of guilt. I just hope Bru doesn’t take him down the mopey path. I think the thing to consider as well is that in times of stress and unhappiness, people can often do things out of character. In a way, his cheating on Milla is a natural reaction to what had come before. It doesn’t excuse, but it does explain it.
