Consider me floored by this issue. I think I understand now how people who’ve been checking out so many new Image comics have been feeling lately. This first issue for this series was so excellent. Edmundson makes the smart choice to not bog the story down in needless story details. Instead, he relies on the strength of his dialogue and action to drive the story along. This is one of those stories where we are simply thrown into the middle of it, and the adventure will come from us exploring not only the characters’ past, but also how they will survive the danger that they are in. Action in the issue is tense, and that’s mostly thanks to Nic Klein’s incredible pencils. The storytelling and layouts give a real sense of urgency as the two main characters run from danger. I was breathlessly turning the pages to see what happened next, and the twist at the end was great, totally hooking me into the next issue.

Nic Klein’s art is fantastic in this issue. For this story, he uses a more grounded, less painterly style. I would describe it as a heavier lined, slightly more sketchy Jon Paul Leon mixed with a little Phil Noto. If either of those names get you excited, then you should totally check out the art in this book. The dark moody colors really helped enhance the danger that the characters are in, and added a sense of dread to everything that was going on. All in all, I thought this was a gorgeous book, and this style is definitely up my wheelhouse.
