So, I'm apparently making up for lost time here, and I'm gonna write yet another review today.
Honestly, New Avengers #47, despite its tie-in to a major event, is the kind of comic Bendis does best. It's also my favorite type of super-hero comic -- it's a very personal story that uses the trappings of the super-hero world.Sure it may not have the requisite slugfest, the huge reveal, but what's here is: a very human story, snuggled into a major cross-over.
The premise is simple: Luke Cage, adjusting to fatherhood, tells his infant daughter the story how how he and Jessica Jones first met. It's a simple but heartfelt story about fathers and sons and the girl who helped out. It's nice. And it's complete. In this issue you have one entire story. If you're into it, you also have some nice hooks into the major event. But if not -- just ignore those last few pages. You've still got a nice story here.
Gaydos' art is excellent as always. I'm not as big a fan of Billy Tan's work, but it serves its purpose here as a framing sequence. While Gaydos' work merits a 5, I need to knock off a point for Tan. Sorry, pal. Just personal taste.
I've gotta subtract a point for story because this nice little tale had to be buried in a book that it doesn't need to be buried in. The story with the baby jumps from a happy moment to a climactic one, one that depends upon the mainseries. And despite the fact that I do recognize the theme of re-creating old Avengers' covers with skrull-faces, Hawkeye's just too prominent here and it doesn't feel quite right.
Still, there's a nice story here, and it deserves attention.
