Chris Roberson is taking bigger risks and writing better Fables stories than Bill Willingham right now.  This issue takes us out of the mundy world, and places us into a world where all magic has been forbidden, which, as you can imagine, makes things a little difficult for Cinderella and Alladin.

I don’t know whether Roberson is just having more fun with Fables right now then Willingham, whether he just has less constraints (how many titles is Willingham currently working on?), or what, but this book feels more fun without losing any depth in the story.  And Shawn Mcmanus manages to do the bare-faced background characters (please no polar bear jokes) better than most of the artists right now.  What’s become a pet peeve of mine in most books (admittedly, mostly Marvel books) works well with the story here.  Background characters who are nothing more than glorified smiley faces make perfect sense here.  And when he does zoom in and give us some facial grammar, it comes across really well.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
