Size: 32 pages

Let’s face it, there is too much going on in each issue of Chew. Now that I know full well that Rob Guillory adds jokes in tiny places of the panel, every page is like a whole new experience. Of course it helps that John Layman gives us an amazing script every single issue. However, there is one thing that makes me believe this is pick of the week worthy. The addition of the best new animal for our planet:

The Fricken.

I love it how, even with a bevy of jokes, Layman is crafting a complicated and intriguing story. Savoy Mason has become a fantastic villain (of sorts) and his complicated past is getting fleshed out bit by bit. His Samuel L. Jackson-like partner is a nice addition and I like it he didn’t do the obvious jokes as the ‘Pulp Fiction’ cover gives you. Tony Chu himself is becoming real fleshed out and he’s now becoming a strongcharacter and not just a wimpy person. Even with all of this great writing on board, the addition of the Fricken is more then enough for me to love this issue.

More random notes, funny background characters, and overall a great amount of detail comes from Guillory again. I am amazed that Guillory doesn’t seem to be getting offers from other companies to work for them. How can that be the case when every single issue of this series is just so damn beautiful? It’s still like no other comic out there and even if there were no words in any issue; I’d still say it would be a must buy. That’s how fantastic Guillory is.

It’s unlucky issue #13 but there is no bad luck here. Just another amazing issue by two amazing men for Image. This could be the best Image book out there…..Or at least the one without Robert Kirkman in the credits.
