Since most other reviews seem to fall into two categories - either a quick going over of what the writer and story did (and how successful they were) or a brief synopsis of the story, anything I write under "issues" will probably be purely my unstructured thoughts on the comic. I'd christen it gonzo-comic-journalism, but I'm not much of a writer so we'll just call it "lazy" for now. There's no point though, in rehashing that when there are twenty other reviews for the same title usually, and most go over it much more thoroughly then I would.
So let's just begin by saying this is my 2nd issue of Captain Britain and Mi - 13. Ever. I've never read Excalibur. Never read Captain Britain. Like most Americans, I was probably put off by the "British-ness" of those comics (even though I have and will continue to love most everything else British, be it prose, comedy or most art). So I bought Captain Britian And Mi 13 #3 for not reason save the fantastic interview iFanboy had with Paul Cornell. Based off of the 40 minutes we had with him, he just sounded like a fantastic guy, so I went ahead and picked it up.
I wasn't disappointed, it was good. Really really good. I had little to no idea who most of the people were. I had the old Marvel Masterpieces card of Black Knight, and was aware of Captain Britain (or rather, his absence), but everyone else was completely alien to me, save for the references Cornel made to his characters in the interview. Out of them all though, I loved the idea of John the Skrull, which made this issue all the more poingant/disappointing. It didn't really catch me until the very last frame - I kept waiting for Captain Britian or by the power of Excalibur, or Gray Skull or whatever to fix him. But no, not resurrection, no Family Matters ending, just a reforming of their little elite cadre and that's that. Dang, John. I hardly knew yea. Everything else was wonderfully satisfying -- Secret Invasion is over for England (good for you), the "No More Skrulls" line made me chuckle aloud. All in all, great fun, I'll probably be back for next month's go 'round.
...
I don't guess anybody knows of any other good John the Skrull stories?
