Did you read my review of Ultimate Spider-Man #160? No? Why not, it was great. If you did read it though, you’ll know that I’ve been looking forward to this issue for a while. Essentially this is the dust settling after Peter Parker’s identity is revealed and he is beaten to death in the street. Wow, doesn’t that concept just get your heart racing? I know my Spider-Sence is tingling. (I’d like to apologise for that joke already).
If you did read my USM #160 review, (seriously, why didn’t you?) you might remember that I loved the artwork. Bagley really stepped up and created an issue that was jaw-droppingly fantastic. So it’s no surprise that I’m quite happy to see him return on this issue. But its a little disappointing that he doesn’t hit the same heights as before. It’s also clear that Bagley has returned to a book that has been in somebody else’s hands for a considerable amount of time; His rendition of Flash has a distinct LaFuente style to it and when he tries to draw Kitty Pride’s costume, it lacks the flair, style and believability that made LaFuente’s work so much fun.
But his is art is good and easily equal in quality to the issues he did during the original run of USM, but unfortunately, Bagley set such a high standard for himself with USM #160 that it would’ve been hard to live up to. So maybe we can’t complain, but there are a couple of panels that are almost laughably odd. Just look at the chubby faced, lop-sided Nick Fury. Lets just hope that Sam Jackson doesn’t read this issue. Overall though, the art is good and Bagley’s experience with these characters shines through.
Bendis doesn’t slack though. He keeps the emotional pace of the last issue and hits us with another tear-jerking punch to the jaw. I’ve already ranted about how much I care for these characters and to see them in their hour of grief made me feel like I was mourning Peter as well. My only complaint would be that Bendis attempts to show us how all of Spider-Man’s characters are reacting and as a result, the first half of the book became a quick succession of one or two page glimpses of Kitty Pride, Johnny Storm, Flash Thompson, Gwen Stacy and J. Jonah Jameson. And although I like the idea, it doesn’t work perfectly. Gwen and Jameson’s scenes are emotional and effecting while Flash and Kitty Pride’s moments fall a little flat, perhaps because they haven’t been important characters in USM for sometime now. Soon however the plot finds its focus and we join Gwen and May as they attend Peter’s funeral. I loved this scene and once again, Bendis had a quivering lip as they try to deal with their grief in the face of sudden celebrity and the destruction of their home. It works and it works well. Really, really well.
Overall I think this was another great comic from the Bendis – Bagley team and a worthy follow-up to Ultimate Spider-Man #160 even its not quite as good.
Art: 4/5
Story 4/5
P.S Take a look at the panel from towards the end of the issue, when Gwen and May enter the church. Is that Ben Rielly and Kaine sat behind J.Jonah Jameson? Perhaps this is a hint of who the new Spider-Man will be…
Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
Have to stop you on one point of speculation… it can’t be Ben Reilly. Ultimate Ben Reilly was Curt Connors’ assistant who stole the sample of Peter’s blood mixed with V.E.N.O.M. that eventually led to the clones and Carnage/resurrection of Gwen. And I doubt that’s Kaine, as I doubt that Ultimate Kaine could grow so fast and take on the appearance of 616 Kaine. More likely Bagley threw 616 Ben and Kaine in there as an Easter egg.
Still it was was a decent first chapter, and I’m wondering how it all pans out. Also, good idea to read the final ish of Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates before this one.
